Cavities can be a bear to deal with. They can quickly do a massive amount of damage to your oral health. When your tooth’s protective layer (enamel) has been worn down, bad bacteria such as plaque and tartar can begin to hollow out your tooth. This can cause your tooth’s structure to become compromised. If this happens to you, your dentist can help tackle this issue with a crown, filling, or implant depending on the amount of damage the cavity has done. There are also steps you can take at home to keep your smile cavity free.

Float Like Gravity, Never Have A Cavity

Here several steps you can take to help keep your smile healthy and cavity free:

  •  Add more calcium into your diet. It doesn’t have to be just dairy products. Fruits and vegetables contain healthy amounts of calcium as well. Also, be sure to drink tap water. Tap water contains fluoride which will remineralize and strengthen your enamel.
  •  Change your toothbrush at least every 3 months. If your toothbrush’s bristles have become broken or frayed, it is completely ineffective at removing plaque and must be replaced.
  •  Floss and brush your teeth twice a day. It only takes 24 hours for plaque to calcify into tartar. Once tartar has developed, it can’t be removed without your dentist’s professional tools. To avoid developing tartar, maintain a regimented schedule of brushing and flossing at least two times a day. Once in the morning and once before you go to bed. Brush thoroughly for at least two minutes to remove sugars and food particles.
  •  Avoid sugar. Try and remove sugar from your die. If you need to snack on something sweet, try sugarless gum. It can satiate your appetite for sweets and help your teeth.
