Lower Your Risk Of Cavities With These Tips
Posted by Lone Star Dental Care Apr 30, 2017
Cavities are no walk in the park. They’re quite the opposite in fact. When your tooth’s protective layer (enamel) has been completely worn down, bad bacteria such as plaque and tartar can begin to hollow out your tooth. This can leave your tooth’s structure compromised. If this happens to you, your dentist can combat this issue with a filling, crown, or implant depending on the amount of damage the cavity has done. If you wish to avoid this, here are some tips to lower your risk of cavities.
Take The Fight To Cavities
Here are just a few things you can do to help keep your smile healthy and cavity free:
- Brush and floss twice a day. It only takes plaque around 24 hours to calcify into tartar. Once tartar has developed, it can’t be removed without your dentist’s professional tools. To avoid developing tartar, maintain a regimented schedule of brushing and flossing at least two times a day. Once in the morning and once before you go to bed. Brush thoroughly for at least two minutes to remove sugars and food particles.
- Include a healthy amount of calcium in your diet. Your diet doesn’t have to be just dairy products. You can munch on fruits and vegetables to get calcium as well. Also, be sure to drink tap water. Tap water contains fluoride which will remineralize and strengthen your enamel.
- Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. If your toothbrush has broken or frayed bristles, it is completely ineffective at removing plaque and must be replaced.
- Avoid sugar. Try and cut sugar from your diet wherever you can. If you need to snack on something sweet, try sugarless gum. It can satiate your appetite for sweets and help your teeth.
