Wisdom teeth are also known as third molars because they come in later in life after the second permanent molars. Wisdom teeth do not always cause issues, and sometimes they may be okay to remain in the mouth. Most of the time, however, wisdom teeth need to be removed to create any complications in your smile. Many people do not have enough room in their mouth for a third set of molars. The wisdom teeth can push the other teeth in your mouth of alignment. Wisdom teeth can also cause some issues as they erupt through the gums. Wisdom teeth usually start to emerge in young adults between the ages of 17 and 23. However, the earlier the teeth are removed, the less likely they are to cause complications, so early removal is often advised.

Relieving Pain

If you do not have the proper space for a wisdom tooth to erupt, the tooth can become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth will grow at an awkward angle pushing against your nearby molars. This can cause quite a bit of pain. It can also create damage for the rest of the teeth. Wisdom teeth can also cause the gums that they are emerging from to become infected and swollen, which can also be quite painful. Food can get trapped under the gum flap created by an emerging wisdom tooth. This type of infection can be irritating and painful.

Protecting Your Other Teeth

As the wisdom teeth continue to push into your mouth, it may cause the other teeth to shift and move out of regular alignment. This will cause crooked teeth, which can create nooks and crannies ripe for tooth decay. This can also create damage to the rest of your teeth. Removing the wisdom teeth allows for the rest of your teeth to stay safely intact.
