Advanced, Incision-Free Periodontal Surgery
Gum recession can be caused by a number of factors, including gum disease, overly-aggressive brushing, or excessive pressure from teeth-grinding. If you exhibit gum recession, Dr. Vahadi may recommend the minimally-invasive Pinhole Surgical Technique, or PST®, to revitalize your gums and promote tissue reattachment without conventional gum surgery.
Treating Gum Recession with Pinhole Surgery
Unlike gum grafting, pinhole surgery does not involve cutting or bonding new tissue to the gums. Instead, PST® involves creating a tiny hole through which Dr. Vahadi can use special instruments to gently reposition loose, receding gum tissues. PST® is specifically beneficial for treating gum recession that is not caused by gum disease.
The treatment itself only takes 1-2 hours and produces stable results that can last for years at a time. Our team can treat all areas of receding gums in one session, or we can focus on treating one arch or quadrant of the mouth at a time. Dr. Vahadi and his team will discuss your treatment options with you.
How the Procedure Works
We utilize a local anesthetic on the affected gum area to ensure that our patients are comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Then, Dr. Vahadi will make a small entry point in the gums (.1 inch) above the tooth that is being treated. He will then use a specially designed dental instrument that is patented by PST founder Dr. Chao. The gum tissue will become free and Dr. Vahadi will move your gums into the proper position. He finishes the procedure by passing small collagen strips through the entry point and placing them under the gums. In some cases, sutures are used to help secure the gums into place.
The Benefits of PST®
There are several benefits to choosing the Pinhole Surgical Technique® for gum recession, including:
No scalpel so there is little to no bleeding, swelling, or discomfort compared to periodontal surgery.
A healthier, younger, more attractive look for your gums.
Preserving a maximum amount of healthy, natural gum tissue.
No sutures so healing is more comfortable.
PST® significantly reduces the risks of infection during healing.
