Tooth Extractions Q & A

What are tooth extractions? Tooth extractions are a type of outpatient surgery used to remove one or several teeth. Though your permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, they aren’t invincible. Tooth decay, infections, and alignment issues like overcrowding can result in serious complications, negatively affecting your oral health and well-being. Extractions provide a quick and convenient way to address these and other issues. Following extractions, you can receive an oral prosthetic, such as a bridge or dental implant, to keep your surrounding teeth from moving out of place.

How do I prepare for tooth extractions?

Before recommending tooth extractions, your Lone Star Dental Care provider conducts an oral exam and takes a series of oral X-rays. Be sure to tell your dentist about any medications, vitamins, or supplements you regularly take. It’s also important to let your dentist know about any chronic conditions you’re living with, including diabetes, high blood pressure, or an impaired immune system. These issues won’t prevent you from undergoing extractions, but they may increase your risk of complications. After gathering the necessary information, your dentist develops a custom extraction plan.

What are the types of tooth extractions?

At Lone Star Dental Care, the team performs several types of tooth extractions, including:

Simple extractions

Simple extractions remove teeth above the gum line. Prior to a simple extraction, your dentist administers a local anesthetic. Once the anesthesia sets in, they use a handheld tool called an elevator to gently loosen the tooth. Afterward, they remove it using forceps.

Surgical extractions

If you have impacted teeth, or teeth below the gum line, your provider might recommend a surgical extraction. Prior to treatment, your dentist administers a local anesthetic. After the anesthesia sets in, your dentist makes a small incision along your gum line to reveal the impacted tooth (or teeth). They cut the tooth into four sections and remove each piece one at a time. Following the extraction, your provider stitches up your gum line.

Are tooth extractions safe?

Tooth extractions are safe and usually well-tolerated. Following treatment, it’s normal to experience some tooth sensitivity, mild swelling, and discomfort. In the first 24 hours following your procedure, take your medications as prescribed and apply an ice pack to your cheek as necessary. Avoid smoking or drinking from a straw for at least 24 hours. Eat soft foods like mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs for the first few days. As your mouth begins to heal, slowly reintroduce other foods into your diet.
