Root Canal Treatment Q & A

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a quick, outpatient procedure used to preserve a permanent tooth and prevent the need for an extraction. Each of your teeth has a chamber inside (root canal) that contains pulp. Pulp features a mixture of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It makes it possible to feel sensations like hot and cold but isn’t necessary for your tooth’s long-term survival. By removing infected or damaged tooth pulp, it’s possible to ease pain and limit further damage.

Why would I need root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected tooth pulp. The team at Lone Star Dental Care regularly performs root canal treatment to address damage caused by:
  • Deep decay
  • Chips or cracks
  • Automobile accidents and sports injuries
  • Work-related injuries
The team also uses root canal treatment to treat weak or damaged teeth that need to undergo multiple procedures. Am I a good candidate for root canal treatment? To determine if you’re a good candidate for root canal treatment, your Lone Star Dental Care provider conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about the symptoms you’re experiencing. If a visual observation isn’t enough to make a recommendation, your dentist orders a series of X-rays to get a closer look at your tooth roots and jawbones.

How does root canal treatment work?

Root canal treatment typically takes two separate appointments. At your initial consultation, your dentist administers a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort and carefully makes an access hole in the top of your affected tooth. Afterward, they remove the infected tooth pulp and clean the center of your tooth out with an antiseptic solution. Your dentist then fills it with a material called gutta-percha and takes molds of your tooth. They send the molds to a laboratory that manufactures a custom crown. A week or two later, you return to Lone Star Dental Care. At your second appointment, your dentist bonds your new crown to the top of your treated tooth. This restores your tooth to its near-original shape and size while limiting the risk of future damage.

What is recovery like following root canal treatment?

Following root canal treatment, it’s normal to experience some minor discomfort and tooth sensitivity. In the first 24 hours following treatment, avoid drinking with a straw and don’t brush or floss. Take your medications as prescribed and eat only soft foods like scrambled eggs and yogurt. You should feel back to normal within a few days’ time.
