Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are tailor-made shells of porcelain that your Lone Star Dental Care provider bonds to the front of your permanent teeth. Porcelain is a ceramic that’s very similar in appearance to your tooth enamel. It’s semi-translucent, allowing it to blend in with the rest of your smile. The number of veneers you’ll need depends on your goals for treatment. Some people get one or two, but most get six or eight, in order to achieve complete symmetry and balance.

What issues can veneers treat?

Veneers are incredibly versatile. At Lone Star Dental Care, the team uses veneers to address a variety of issues, including:
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth
  • Severely stained or discolored teeth
You might also benefit from veneers if you have small gaps or spaces between your teeth.

Does getting veneers take more than one appointment?

Getting veneers typically takes two appointments. At your first appointment, your Lone Star Dental Care provider conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about your goals for treatment. If you have healthy teeth and gums, your provider administers a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort and carefully removes a thin layer of enamel from each tooth about one millimeter thick. After preparing your teeth, your dentist takes a series of impressions. They send your impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your porcelain veneers. Several weeks later, you return to Lone Star Dental Care and your dentist administers a local anesthetic and carefully bonds your veneers to your teeth. You leave the office with a brilliant, attractive smile. The team at Lone Star Dental Care prefers to apply veneers created by a laboratory. However, for busy individuals, they also offer chair-side veneers. Chair-side veneers only take one appointment. They’re thinner and less durable than porcelain veneers, but they can improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile nonetheless.

How do I take care of my veneers?

If you want to keep your veneers in good shape for years to come, it’s important to brush and floss daily and visit Lone Star Dental Care every six months for a professional exam and cleaning. If possible, try to avoid bad habits like nail-biting and chewing on ice cubes, as both of these activities can cause your veneers to chip or crack.
